Eric Mackenzie: Playing AFL with the West Coast Eagles and studying Sports Science at ECU

My name’s Eric Mackenzie and I study Sports
Science at ECU and I also play football for the West Coast Eagles. The Sports Science
course at ECU is really good and having been playing footy for ten years at West Coast,
um, it gives me a good theoretical background to a lot of the stuff we do here so I can
now take that into the profession afterwards. It’s the flexibility in their tutes they
have them um most days so it works in around my schedule I can change tutes here and there,
they make it very easy for that and the tutors are very hands-on so they can I can go see
them to catch up on things I’ve missed out on. The facilities at ECU are first-class
ah, the Eagles go up there and do some of their Sports Science testing up there as well
so it’s very professional. Another great benefit of the course is the tutors. They
take their time out ah to come see me in between my training and those kind of things so I
can catch up on anything I missed while I’m out on the training track. I use my breaks
in between tutes and lectures I go into the library there, they’ve got a great library,
um plenty of resources there which I can read up on for the coming lecture. Their online
database is really good they’ve got a lot of journal articles which I can use ah for
my projects, assignments, those kind of things as well, as well as broadening my knowledge
base. ECU’s great for Sport Science ah they’ve got a lot of practical hours, you learn the
theory as well, but it’s very hands-on so you have to do all exercise, you have to do
the weights, the running, be able to take classes, all those different kind of things.
So it gives you a very broad broad base but then brings altogether so you can use it in
a professional organisation or if you go to a smaller type place as well. Yeah my goal
at the end of ah this degree is to get a high performance role ah in a professional sports
organisation. I’d love to go to a soccer club or end up in football as well. Ah the
course has got great practical opportunities ah last year I was able to go to a Sports
Science conference overseas, over in Copenhagen, so I got to travel, which is another one of
my passions. I got to meet some leading ah sports scientists in their field so guys from
all the big soccer clubs in Europe, ah couple of NFL teams, as well as Gaelic rugby as well,
so it was good to network and meet them and to hear a different perspective on football
as well. I love all my sports so this has given me a good base for all the different
kinds of sports. I can see myself ending up in a professional organisation um doesn’t
matter what sport I’d love to be in one of those big elite organisations.
