The Eugene Country Club is a long-standing pillar of Eugene’s athletic community. In May of 2016 the Eugene Country Club hosted the NCAA Division 1 Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships. Hosting two sporting events of this magnitude, at the same location, poses a challenge for golf courses. Yet the Eugene Country Club made the commitment and pulled it off splendidly. For two weeks during peak golf season club members had to forego course access but the Eugene Country Club membership unanimously chose to host these two championship tournaments. They certainly love their Ducks! Because of their support this was the first time that the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships were held at the same golf course. “For the community it kind of put Eugene, Oregon on the golf map. We were able to bring the best amateur players in collegiate golf to our community and they competed on a stage against one another and you know, wound up being one of the most memorable championships in college golf.” The impact of an event this size has a profound economic impact on the community between both events an estimated four million dollars in visitor spending was realized. Additionally, this introduced Eugene and the Eugene Country Club as a championship-level community to a worldwide audience. The Golf Channel featured more than 25 combined hours of live tournament coverage for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships as well as more than 50 hours of replays. “What we experienced were record-setting attendance and spectators that came out and then the Golf Channel had informed us soon after that the viewership for the two weeks had exceeded 4.7 million during that two-week period. So we’ve gained a lot of exposure for Eugene and the Willamette Valley.” And the Eugene Country Club continues to welcome renowned events like the USGA Senior Amateur, scheduled for 2018. With a mission for excellence in the region and hosting world-class golf the Eugene Country Club is a perfect choice for the 2017 Eugene, Cascades & Coast Sports Leadership Award.
