From Club Baseball to the Pros

There are a bunch of new faces for ECU’s
Club Baseball team. While the star of last season’s national
championship winning team is gone, he’s not too far away. I love this place. I love these guys. After his senior season, pitcher Tanner Duncan
signed with the Houston Astros, becoming the first ECU Club Baseball player to play professional
ball. Living the dream, living the dream – couldn’t
be happier. I truly believe that he should have been playing
at another level the whole time, but we were lucky enough to have him. Tanner tried out for ECU’s baseball team
three times but never made it, so he played club baseball instead. I think coming up short the last couple of
years too, really drove me – what if I did this, what if I did that? If I work as hard as I can and it don’t
happen, you know it is what it is. I didn’t want to have any regrets coming
into this year. That hard work and belief in himself paid
off in more ways than one. Not only did Tanner lead his team to the Club
Baseball Association National Championship, but he was named the MVP of the tournament. It’s a storybook moment. I don’t think it could have went any better. He just worked so hard for it and I’m so
proud of him. After a successful summer playing for the
Gulf Coast League Astros, Tanner is in his off season. And his presence at the club baseball team
practice is an example for these players as to what hard work and determination can do. It brings up that what if factor, where if
you could play ball, you could potentially be in the same position that he did. There’s a lot of talent out here – a lot
of good players that participate in this and I hope people recognize that now.
