German foreign exchange student fitting in just fine with Centerville’s football team

MINERS WERE STRUGGLING TO WIN GAMESOR EVENFIELD A TEAM.. THIS YEAR, THEIR ONE OF THE TOP TEAMSIN THE NORTHERN C, THANKS IN PART TO ONE BIG ADDITION FROM ACROSS THE ATLANTIC.. BRETT KENNEDY REPORTS. TAKE PKG:2:56 OC… IN THE MIDST OF THE CENTERVILLE FOOTBALL TEAMS HUDDLE, THERE EMERGES A GIANT, A GERMAN GIANT. THIS IS STARTING 6’4 WIDE RECEIVER AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT, PHILIP OKONKWO, WHO IS FROM BAVARIA GERMANY. OKONKWO’S HAD FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE BEFORE OVER IN EUROPE, MAKING AN ALL-STAR TEAM THERE LAST YEAR, BUT AS THE JUNIOR TRANSITIONED INTO THE AMERICAN GAME, THERE WERE OBVIOUSLY SAME CHANGES TO GET USED TO. MCGINNESS – “HE STARTED AS AN 11-MAN PLAYER OVER IN GERMANY. COMING DOWN TO 8-MAN WAS A LITTLE DIFFERENT FOR HIM, BECAUSE HE HAD BIGGER FOOTBALLS OVER THERE TOO. WHEN WE GOT HERE HE WAS LIKE ARE THESE THE FOOTBALLS WE USE IN THE GAME?’ HE THOUGHT THEY WERE VERY SMALL.” OKONKWO – “I THINK THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE IS THAT HERE WE HAVE PRACTICE EVERY SCHOOL DAY, AND IT’S A SCHOOL TEAM. IN GERMANY WE JUST HAD PRACTICE ONLY TWO TIMES A WEEK. I LIKE IT WAY MORE TO HAVE PRACTICE EVERY DAY. IN AMERICA (FOOTBALL) IS MORE HYPED THAN IN GERMANY AND IT’S MORE FUN.” PHILIP’S OLDER BROTHER PLAYED FOOTBALL, AND WATCHING GAMES WITH HIM GROWING UP MADE OKONKWO PASSIONATE ABOUT PLAYING THE GAME. A PASSION HE’S USING TO GET IN TUNE WITH THE MINER’S OFFENSE, PHILIP CAUGHT THREE TOUCHDOWNS IN HIS FIRST EVER GAME AS A MINER AGAINST BELT, GAINING THE TRUST OF QUARTERBACK CARSON MCGINNESS. OKONKWO – “CARSON IS ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS HERE, MAYBE EVEN MY BEST FRIEND. I DON’T KNOW IF HE THINKS LIKE THAT BUT I THINK LIKE THAT. WE HAVEN’T KNOWN EACH OTHER TOO LONG BUT I TRUST HIM VERY WELL AND HE TRUSTS ME A LOT I THINK TOO.” OKUOKWO ALSO PLAYS DEFENSIVE END, BUT HIS TRUE TALENT IS RECEIVER AND LIKELY SO, PHILIP SAYS HE MODELS HIS GAME AFTER NFL WIDE-OUTS MIKE EVANS AND RECENTLY RETIRED CALVIN JOHNSON. WITH THE PROGRESS HE’S MADE SO FAR, ONE ONLY KNOWS THE POSSIBILITIES THAT LIE IN STORE FOR THE GERMAN. ONE FACT IS CLEAR THOUGH, HIS QUARTERBACK AND HEAD COACH ARE ECSTATIC THAT HE’S ON THEIR SIDE. MCGINNESS – :”HE’S BEEN A GREAT ADDITION TO THE TEAM. WE HAVE A LOT OF REALLY GOOD RECEIVERS BUT THEY DON’T HAVE HIS HEIGHT THOUGH. HE HAS A BIG ADVANTAGE ON EVERYONE ELSE BECAUSE A LOT OF OTHER CORNERBACKS IN THE LEAGUE AREN’T AS BIG AS HIM, PLUS HE’S GOT SPEED. HIS STRENGTH, HE’S REALLY STRONG, HE’S BUILT WELL. HE CAN KNOCK YOU OVER IF HE WANTS TOO.” DAVISON – “IT’S NICE HAVING A 6’4 GUY TO SPLIT OUT WIDE. WE HAVE ANOTHER 6’3 GUY AS A TIGHT END WITH JADON DAVIS. SO HAVING THOSE TWO OUT THERE AND BEING ABLE TO SPLIT (PHILIP) OUT, USUALLY ON SMALLER (DEFENSIVE BACKS), IT’S DEFINITELY HAVING HAVING THEM WITH THEIR SIZE AND SPEED.” PHILIP HAS FIT IN WELL WITH HIS OTHER MINER TEAMMATES, HE’S NO DIFFERENT THAN ANYONE ELSE, HE JUST WANTS TO GET OUT THERE AND FEED HIS PASSION! DAVISON – “HE HAS KNOWLEDGE OF THE GAME. HE DOES ANYTHING THAT WE ASK HIM TO DO AND HE GOES 100 PERCENT DOING IT. THE KID OBVIOUSLY LOVES FOOTBALL AND HE’S PRETTY GOOD AT IT.” BRETT KENNEDY..MTN SPORTS
