Sports Club Jamboree with Baltimore Orioles Manager

WELCOME BACK NORFOLK
PERSPECTIVES. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT SPORTS
LATELY? I THINK THERE’S SOME PLAYOFFS IN
COLLEGE, ODU DOING SOME STUFF. RIGHT, JACK ANKERSON?
>>NO QUESTION.>>Bob: MEN’S TEAM?
>>MEN’S TEAM. WE DIDN’T GET A BOWL BID, ONLY
HAD FIVE WINS, SO DID NOT GET A BOWL BID.
>>Bob: BUT IT’S A WHOLE NEW WORLD.
>>TOTALLY, TOTALLY.>>Bob: BILL RAINEY, JAMBOREE
CHAIRMAN.>>YES, SIR.
>>Bob: HOW DID YOU GET THAT GIG?
>>YOU WORK YOUR WAY THROUGH THE CHAIRS AND BEFORE YOU BECOME THE
PRESIDENT, YOU HAVE TO DO THE JAMBOREE AND IT’S AN ALL-DAY
AFFAIR. STARTS OFF WITH THE PAST
PRESIDENTS BREAKFAST AND THEN THE LUNCHEON AND THE BIG NIGHT
OF THE JAMBOREE, WE GIVE MORE AWARDS TO OTHER PEOPLE.
>>Bob: AND YOUR REWARD IS MORE RESPONSIBILITY —
>>YEAH.>>Bob: NEXT YEAR?
>>YES, I’LL BE THE PRESIDENT NEXT YEAR.
>>Bob: AND THE JAMBOREE IS JANUARY 26th.
>>JANUARY 26th.>>Bob: AND IT IS THE EVENT TO
COME DOWN TOO, RIGHT?>>DOWNTOWN MARRIOTT, YES, SIR.
>>Bob: THERE WILL BE OPINIONS THERE?
>>DEFINITELY.>>Bob: AND WE’LL TALK MORE
ABOUT THE SPEAKER BECAUSE IT’S SPECIAL.
JOE MONACO, FIRST VICE PRESIDENT FOR THE NORFOLK SPORTS CLUB.
YOU’VE DONE THE JAMBOREE?>>NO, I’M BEHIND BILL.
I’VE BEEN WITH THE CLUB SINCE ’74 AND NOW I’M ON THE — ’84,
AND NOW ON THE BOARD.>>Bob: TELL ME ABOUT THIS.
YOU’RE MOVING IT.>>IT ORIGINALLY BEGAN IN
DOWNTOWN NORFOLK –>>Bob: A COUPLE OF YEARS BEFORE
YOU GUYS WERE PALLING AROUND.>>YEAH, THIS IS THE 40 — WHAT
YEAR? 71st YEAR OF THE SPORTS CLUB.
THERE’S BEEN A JAMBOREE FOR EVERY YEAR IN EXISTENCE OF THE
SPORTS CLUB, SO THIS IS 71st, SO THEY STARTED BACK IN NORFOLK
BACK THEN. 1940?
WHATEVER IT WOULD BE.>>Bob: YEAH, THE MATH.
BEFORE I WAS AROUND.>>BUT WE ARE MOVING BACK TO
HITS AT THE PARK. AT ONE POINT THE RESTAURANT AT
HARBOR PARK AND AT ONE POINT, THE VERY POPULAR PLACE WAS THE
OLD MET PARK, THE DIAMOND CLUB AT MET PARK WAS WHERE THE SPORTS
CLUB MET, SO WE’RE KIND OF GOING BACK.
WE’RE EXCITED TO GO BACK TO GOWN NORFOLK, JANUARY 11th OUR FIRST
MEETING DATE IF DOWNTOWN.>>Bob: NOW IN PRETAPE, I MADE A
SEXIST COMMENT, I’M GOING TO SAY.
THIS IS A BUNCH OF GUYS STANDING AROUND TALKING SPORTS.
NO POLITICS, RIGHT? JUST SPORTS.
>>CERTAIN THINGS ARE VERY OFF LIMITS.
>>Bob: BUT YOU CORRECTED ME VERY QUICKLY.
THERE’S WOMEN IN THE CLUB TOO.>>MAKE NO MISTAKE.
WE EVEN HAD A WOMAN PRESIDENT BACK IN 2006.
A YOUNG LADY NAMED AMY MORRISSEY TURK, A FORMER ATHLETE IN HER
OWN RIGHT AT OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY AND AN ATTORNEY, AND
AMY WENT THROUGH THE CHAIRS, AS JOE ALLUDED TO GOING THROUGH THE
CHAIRS, THAT’S THE PROCESS, AND SHE DID A VERY FINE JOB AND NOW
WE HAVE TO SECOND ONE ON THE BOARD WHO WILL BE DOING THE SAME
THING.>>Bob: COOL.
NOW, BILL, YOU GOT TO RAISE THE BAR REAL HIGH SO WHEN HE TAKES
OVER NEXT YEAR, HE’S GOT A MAJOR HURDLE TO DO, RIGHT?
>>WELL, VICKY TREXLER TAKES IT OVER NEXT YEAR AND HIS IS THE
FOLLOWING.>>Bob: WHAT DO YOU HAVE
COOKING?>>WE HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE
COMING, BUCK SHOWALTER GOING TO BE OUR MAIN SPEAKER.
I WENT TO DAVE ROSE SEND FIELD AND HE HELPED ME GET A SPHERIC
RIGHT O OFF THE BAT.>>Bob: DAVE HAS THAT CLOUT.
HE KNOWS WHERE PEOPLE ARE.>>AND WE HAVE SEVERAL AWARDS TO
PRESENT THAT NIGHT. I CAN NAME A FEW OF THE PEOPLE
ON THE PROGRAM BUT THERE’S A FEW I CAN’T BECAUSE SOME OF THE
AWARDS PRESENTED ARE NOT NAMED UNTIL THAT NIGHT.
>>Bob: SO IF YOU NAME OTHER PEOPLE, THROUGH THE PROCESS
OF — WHY DON’T WE NOT TALK THAT CHANCE AND TALK ABOUT WHERE IT
IS.>>DOWNTOWN NORFOLK MARRIOTT.
>>Bob: THIS IS A BIG EVENT.>>YES, SIR, AN ALL-DAY AFFAIR.
>>Bob: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE JAMBOREE?
>>RAISING FUNDS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND CHARITIES AND
THE AWARDS THE KIDS GET.>>Bob: I’VE BEEN JOKING AROUND
AND THERE’S AT LEAST EIGHT DIFFERENT OPINIONS AT LEAST
RIGHT HERE ABOUT SPORTS. BUT THAT’S NOT REALLY WHAT IT’S
ABOUT. IT’S ABOUT SUPPORTING THE KIDS.
>>IT IS ABOUT THE KIDS. WE’RE ALL ABOUT THE KIDS AND
WE’RE — WE TAKE CARE OF THE SOUTH HAMPTON, SOUTH TIDEWATER
AREA. WE TAKE CARE OF NORFOLK SCHOOLS,
VIRGINIA BEACH SCHOOLS AND CHESAPEAKE SCHOOLS AND AWARD
SCHOLARSHIPS TO THE KIDS.>>Bob: JOE, IS THAT ONE OF THE
REASONS YOU GOT INVOLVED?>>IT’S ONE OF THEM.
BUT TO BE HONEST WITH YOU, I LOVE SPORTS.
>>Bob: AND YOU HAVE AN OPINION.>>WHO DOESN’T?
SO I GOT INVOLVED –>>EVERYBODY HAS ONE.
>>IT WAS A GREAT WAY TO DO A NUMBER OF THINGS.
ONE, I WAS ABLE TO HELP THE KIDS IN THE AREA.
SECONDLY, I WAS ABLE TO JUST BE WITH THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO
ENJOYED SPORTS AND TALK ABOUT IT, AND I’VE GOT TO BE HONEST.
AS A BUSINESSMAN, IT’S REALLY JUST A GREAT WAY TO NETWORK.
I GOT TO MEET PEOPLE LIKE JACK ANKERSON AND BILL RAINEY AND YOU
GET TO MEET A LOT OF INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE, SO I WAS ABLE TO
ACCOMPLISH QUITE A FEW THINGS ALL AT THE SAME TIME BY BEING
PART OF THE CLUB.>>Bob: AND 757 AS BECOME A VERY
POPULAR PLACE TO GROW NEW ATHLETES.
IN FACT, OUR MAYOR WAS SOMEWHAT OF A PRETTY GOOD ATHLETE.
>>HE WAS A PRETTY GOOD ATHLETE, HE SURE WAS, AND HE WAS A PRETTY
GOOD ATHLETE AT VMI.>>Bob: I WAS TOLD MORE THAN A
PRETTY GOOD ATHLETE, JACK, BECAUSE HE IS THE MAYOR NOW.
>>HE’S RATHER MODEST WHEN HE TALKS ABOUT, REFERS TO HIS
ATHLETIC CAREER, BUT YES, HE DID A FINE JOB.
>>Bob: THAT’S THE ONE PLACE WE ALL AGREE.
NOW, JANUARY 26th, NORFOLK WATERSIDE MAYOROUT.
PRICE?>>– MARRIOTT.
PRICE?>>THE PRICE FOR A TABLE OF TEN
IS $800, BUT INDIVIDUAL TICKETS ARE $85 APIECE.
>>Bob: DO THE MATH, BUY A TABLE.
>>YES.>>Bob: LOOK, WE ALL AGREE!
THANKS A LOT. WHEN WE COME BACK, WE HAVE A
SPECIAL PROGRAM YOU’RE GOING TO WANT TO BECOME INVOLVED IN.
STAY TUNED.
