Star-studded evening at the 72nd Norfolk Sports Jamboree

IT IS THE LONGEST RUNNING AND MOST ENTERTAINING SPORTS EVENT IN HAMPTON ROADS HISTORY–THE 72ND NORFOLK SPORTS CLUB JAMBOREE. I’M BRUCE RADER, WELCOME TO THE SPORTSWRAP LIVE ON THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT. NO GROUP HAS EVER DONE A BETTER JOB PROMOTING SPORTS IN VIRGINIA THAN THE NORFOLK SPORTS CLUB. AND AS NATHAN EPSTIEN REPORTS TONIGHT, THE STARS WERE OUT ONCE AGAIN, HONORING THE BIGGEST NAMES. THE HEAD MAN OF OLD DOMINION– A NATIONAL CHAMPION FROM JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY— THE ACC COACH OF THE YEAR– AND THE WINNINGEST ACTIVE HEAD COACH IN DIVISION I FCS FOOTBALL—–ALL HONORED AS PART OF THE 72ND NORFOLK SPORTS CLUB JAMBOREE IN NORFOLK. THIS IS THE OLDEST ACTIVE SPORTS CLUB IN THE COUNTRY THAT MEETS ON AN ANNUAL BASIS. THAT’S IMPRESSIVE. THAT’S RIGHT HERE IN THE CITY OF NORFOLK. WHAT I ALWAYS THINK ABOUT, NATHAN, IS WHAT THEY DO ON A CONSISTENT BASIS WITH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENT ATHLETES. THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES. THE NORFOL SPORTS CLUB HAS AWARD ONE POINT FIVE MILLION DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY TO 500 ATHLETES, AND AS IS THE CASE TONIGHT, HAS HELPED RECOGNIZE SOME OF THE FINEST COACHES, ATHLETS AND ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATORS IN VIRGINIA HISTORY. FIRST OF ALL IT’S AN HONOR TO EVEN BE ASKED. VIRGINIA TECH’S FIRST YEAR HEAD MAN JUSTIN FUENTE—WHO’S TEAM WON 10 GAMES AND THE BELK BOWL—WAS THE KEY NOTE SPEAKER. WHEN YOU GET THE INVITATION AND YOU LOOK AT THE LIST OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE PRESENTED OR TALKED HERE IN THE PAST, IT’S A PRETTY DAUTNING LIST. I CERTAINLY BY NO MEANS CONSIDER MYSELF IN THOSE SAME CATEGORIES, BUT IT’S AN OPPORTUNITY I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE TO DO. FORMER BAYSIDE COACH DARNELL MOORE PRESENTED ONE OF HIS BEST PLAYERS, VIRGINIA STAR SAFETY QUIN BLANDING WITH THE AWARD AS THE MOST OUTSTANDING COLLEGIATE ATHLETE FROM A STATE SCHOOL– IT’S JUST AN HONOR. I JUST WANT TO THAN MY TO BE RECOGNIZED IN YOUR HOME TOWN. FOR THE SECOND TIME, COACH WILDER RECEIVED THE METROPOLITAN PERSON OF THE YEAR IN SPORTS— THE AWARD I’M WINNING TONIGHT’S ABOUT WHAT THE PLAYERS ACCOMPLISHED AND WHAT EVERYBODY ELSE DID, BUT IT’S AN HONOR TO BE RECOGNIZED BY THE NORFOLK SPORTS CLUB. AND THE HEAD COACH AT WILLIAM AND MARY GOING ON 38 SEASONS—JIMMYE LAYCOCK RECEIVED A MOST DESERVED LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, BUT PROMTLY ENDED WITH HE’S NOT FINISHED YET—– IN NORFOLK, NATHAN EPSTEIN FOR THE SPORTSWRAP.
