The Daily – Thurs, July 7

Hey everyone.
Welcome to The Daily for Thursday July 7th. I’m Greg Lalas alongside Simon Borg.
And last night four games in Major League Soccer.
But one of them took the cake for us, I think. Simon, a 5-0 win for the Red Bulls.
The Red Bulls taking over first place again in the Eastern Conference.
And doing it again with style. I think Toronto had a lot to do with this
because they played a wide open game. And the Red Bulls took full advantage.
Impressive to see Luke Rodgers, Thierry Henry start to work together again.
And lead the Red Bulls to another win. When those two are on the field together,
the record the Red Bulls have is impressive. Well there’s obviously a lot of talk about
Juan Agudelo and whether he should be a starter or not.
He had two goals in this game coming off the bench.
Well managed by Hans Backe. He brings Agudelo on for Luke Rodgers.
Who is still feeling pain in his heel. He’s suffering from plantar fasciitis.
But he came on. Did his job, left the rest of it.
But the game was already in hand by the time Agudelo came along.
Well Toronto still struggling in the Eastern Conference.
But New York, they go on top. They jump above Philadelphia and Columbus
to grab a top spot in the Eastern Conference. Now speaking of Columbus, they get a big road
win. And the story here.
Obviously Jeff Cunningham tying Jaime Moreno for the all-time goal scoring record in MLS.
And doing it in dramatic fashion. 90th minute, the game winner in Vancouver.
That goal also puts him all alone atop the all-time scoring charts for the Crew as well.
Breaks a tie with Brian McBride. But it was a well played game by both sides.
Vancouver, they are really going to regret the fact that they missed the penalty kick.
Had someone set off, struck the post. Vancouver, nothing’s going right for them
these days. And they’re at the bottom of the Western
Conference again, pretty much. The Canadian teams struggling in MLS right
now. But a team that seems to not be struggling.
Or at least some weeks they’re struggling. Some weeks they’re not.
Chivas USA with a big win over San Jose. 2-0 this one against San Jose.
And San Jose Earthquakes they said they played a terrible game.
They’re not even looking at this anymore. They’re throwing it out the window already.
But Robin Fraser of Chivas USA, the manager. He is happy his team was able to concentrate.
He said the key thing is not the fact that we won.
But the fact that we were able to put a clean sheet.
Lack of concentration. Lapses of concentration have cost Chivas USA
in this recent stretch. And the goals in that one coming from Ben
Zemanski with a great long distance bomb. And Nick LaBrocca, who continues to keep impressing
in the midfield for Chivas USA. The final game from last night that we’re
going to talk about, of course. Sporting Kansas City another result.
Their streak just continues. But they only got the draw at home against
Colorado. But they played well in this game.
Sporting Kansas City creating a host of opportunities. Colorado putting away the one that fell to
Conor Casey. Matt Besler inexplicably falling off his man
and allowing his man to take the shot. But Sporting Kansas City with a very strong
response. They’re going to look back at this game
and feel like they should have come away with three points.
A lot of opportunities. But the key here.
CJ Sapong coming in for Teal Bunbury and turning this game around for his team.
Yeah but of course for Colorado and the fans out there.
It’s important that they saw Conor Casey and Omar Cummings together again.
So the dynamic duo for the Rapids, doing it. Getting a little bit of the job done for them
right there. Now there’s some action tonight here on
the web. We’re going to be streaming the Portland
Timbers versus Club América friendly out in Portland.
It’ll be on portlandtimbers.com. You can get to it through mlssoccer.com.
That’s at 11 PM/ET. What do you think of this one?
Well this is going to be interesting to see Club América.
They’re going to be part of the World Football Challenge this summer.
It’s going to be a good first look at their team as they prepare for the Apertura season
in Mexico. But also, it’s going to be interesting to
see what atmosphere is created. Rodrigo Lopez, a Mexican who plays for the
Portland Timbers He feels this is going to be Seattle vs Portland
all over again on Thursday. Just three days before they meet in league
play. Well we’ll see if that actually turns out
to be the case. I can’t imagine there are many Sounders
fans coming down for the Club América. You never know.
They might come down and cheer for América in this one.
Last little bit. The U.S. National Team on the women’s side
lost their final Group Play 2-1 to Sweden. They move on, though, into the Knockout rounds
where they will face Brazil on Saturday. A huge match for the U.S.
Huge match. And to me.
The result against Sweden insignificant in that they had to face Brazil at some point
in this tournament. If the U.S. is going to win it so might as
well face them in the Quarterfinal stage. Bring ‘em on.
Well although U.S. lost. Abby Wambach finally got off the schneid and
got her first goal in the Women’s World Cup.
A little later on, Extra Time Radio podcast will be available on iTunes and Buzzsprout.
And also here on mlssoccer.com. That’s it for The Daily.
We’ll talk to you tomorrow.
