Youth football teams from all over the city will play to stop violence this weekend

HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND: YOUTH FOOTBALL TEAMS FROM ACROSS THE CITY WILL PLAY IN A TOURNAMENT — AND THEY’LL BE PLAYING FOR MORE THAN JUST A TROPHY. (SCOTT) THEY’RE PLAYING TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT GUN VIOLENCE… AND TO HONOR A HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYER WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED EARLIER THIS YEAR. 24 HOUR NEWS 8’S BRITTANY LEWIS IS LIVE AT RIVERSIDE PARK ON THE WEST SIDE WHERE GAMES WILL START TONIGHT. (BRITTANY) THE KIDS THAT WILL BE PLAYING IN THIS TOURNAMENT ARE ON 8 AND UNDER, 10 AND UNDER AND 12 AND UNDER TEAMS. AND THE MAN ORGANIZING THIS TOURNAMENT SAYS THEY WANT TO USE FOOTBALL FOR A BIGGER PURPOSE — TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT LIFE. AND TO SHOW KIDS AND FAMILIES THAT HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY GUN VIOLENCE THAT THEY CARE. THIS YEAR THE TOURNAMENT WILL HONOR DIJON ANDERSON THE WARREN CENTRAL FOOTBALL PLAYER WHO WAS SHOT BACK IN MAY AND LATER DIED — JUST TWO WEEKS BEFORE HE WAS SET TO GRADUATE AND HEAD TO SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY TO PLAY FOOTBALL. THIS IS ALL ORGANIZED BY THE M.G. DAD’S YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE. THEY STARTED THIS TOURNAMENT LAST YEAR AND HONORED ONE OF THEIR PLAYERS — DEANDRE KNOX WHO WAS SHOT IN THE BACK OF A HEAD BY A STRAY BULLET WHEN HE WAS JUST 13 BACK IN FEBRUARY OF 2014. HE SURVIVED BUT IS NOW A QUADRIPALEGIC. THE PRESIDENT OF THE M.G. DAD’S CLUB YOUTH FOOTBALL TEAM COACHED HIM FOR THREE YEARS. ((IT’S DEVASTATING, IT’S DISHEARTENING, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT’S JUST LIKE A GOOD KID, YOU KNOW YOU HEAR SOMETHING HAPPENS AND A LOT OF PEOPLE THEY REACH OUT AND THEY TELL YOU HOW GOOD KIDS ARE BUT WHEN IT REALY HITS HOME, THE ONLY WORD I CAN FIND IS SENSELESS)) IN TOTAL 16 TEAMS WILL BE PLAYING THIS WEEKEND. THE TEAMS COME FROM ALL OVER THE CITY. THEY’RE EXPECTING MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE TO BE AT TOURNAMENT. (BRITTANY) IN ADDITION TO PLAYING HERE AT RIVERSIDE PARK TONIGHT — THEY’LL BE PLAYING AT CENTRAL GREENS ON THE WEST SIDE ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. (LAUREN) –TIME CHECK– (SCOTT) AHEAD ON DAYBREAK:
